When I joined Mono, there were many UI screens with little or no reusable components, typography styles could have been better, and the colours could have been more consistent. The designs were excellent, but working in an environment like that as a recruit was hell. My primary goal is to record our intentions and approaches to creating a design system and establish a protocol for ongoing maintenance and updates.
Design Language System: The design language system forms the foundation of the design system, encompassing brand guidelines, design principles, and other essential elements that define the organisation's visual style, tone, and overall design approach.
Design Resource System: The design resource system comprises a collection of reusable assets and tools crucial for the design and development process. It includes UI kits and brand assets such as logos, fonts, icons, and illustrations that can be used consistently across projects.
Documentation System: The documentation system serves as a central hub where Mono members can access vital information and resources necessary to apply the design system effectively. It provides comprehensive documentation, guidelines, and instructions on utilising the design system components, ensuring the knowledge is accessible to all relevant stakeholders.
Government system: The governance system establishes protocols and procedures for maintaining and updating the design system. It outlines how changes get reviewed, approved, and implemented, ensuring that the design system remains up-to-date and aligns with evolving product needs and industry standards. This system promotes collaboration, consistency, and continuous improvement in the design process.
As the lead, I played a crucial role in shaping the project direction, leading the team, and ensuring the successful execution of the project from concept to final deliverables. Consequently, I reported to the Head of Design, who oversaw the overall progress and coordination of the project.
